Pre-Celtic Cremation Urn, ca. 800 BC. A burnished wide mouthed cremation urn; shaped like a bowl with a slightly flared lip and bulging body before tapering off to a rounded base. Found in the Danube River region of southern Germany. Measures: 10 X 22 cm.

Etruscan. Bronze Mirror with Modern Bone Handle, 540-200 BC. This exquisite mirror has been etched on one side with a winged figure, wearing military attire, striding left; holding, a very large shield and a club. The other side has no pattern on it because this was the side that would have been polished and reflective. There are two minor holes in mirror and some restoration on the back. Modern handle attached. Mounted on custom stand in a mirror backed case, which beautifully presents both sides of the mirror from the front. Measures: 32.5 cm; Diameter: 16.5 cm.

Apulian. Red-Figure Kantharos, ca. 430-300 BC. Apulian red-figure Kantharos with two high looped handles; on the inside of the handles at lid are two reliefs of female heads, with hair fashioned up, there are two at the base of the handles near the body, also. One side depicts a full figure Greek lady of fashion holding a jewelry box and fan. Reverse: Depicts Eros holding a mirror and bucket(?), with a basin and hydra behind. Painted by a skilled and tasteful hand. One handle is chipped, otherwise intact with no repairs or repainting. Measures: 21.5 X 20.5 cm.

Apulian. Red-Figure Lidded-Lukanis, ca. 430-300 BC. A complete two piece Lukanis. Lid: Eros on both sides holding a mirror and fan, or bag(?). Bottom: Repair to one handle, some metallic iridescent sheen. Expert repair to bottom with 3 long cracks and reattachment of the foot. Upper portion is intact and superbly painted. With no restoration. Measures: 20.5 X 27 cm.

Apulian. Red-Figure Oinochoe, ca. 430-300 BC. A red-figure oinochoe with pedestal base, mastoid body, funicular neck and trefoil spout; the handle a broad ribbed strap; body depicts a woman seated left looking right; wearing a girdled chiton, necklace, bracelets, an earing, and hair tied up; holding patera and bag with long grain stalk before her. Foot has been expertly repaired, otherwise, completely intact. Cf. Bonhams, London, 20 October 2005, Lot 309. Measures: 28 X 11.5 cm.

Apulian. Large Red Figure Bell Krater, ca. 380 BC. Painted by the York Painter, this spectacular piece is dynamic. Depicts a nude Apollo seated left, holding a lyre and laurel branch, being crowned by Artemis, wearing peplos and holding two spears. Before him, a laureate Marsyas, also nude, holding a makhaira and flutes. Reverse: Three young men conversing wearing himations. Pub. Trendall, Rvap II, p. 21, No. 4/210b. Measures: 38.5 cm tall; Diameter: 40 cm.

The scene on the front of the bell krater refers to the myth of when satyr Marsyas, a skilled flutist, challenged Apollo to a music competition. Apollo won the competition and had Marsyas flayed alive for daring to challege the god and losing. The scene depicts the moment when Apollo was crowned winner.

Apulian. Large Red-Figure Bell Krater, ca. 350-340 BC. This vessel was finely potted and painted by a superior artist. One one side it depicts Eros, nude, approaches a maiden, her head turned back, and presents her with a basket of loaves(?) and a fillet, all on a groundline of meanders. A border of laurel leaves above encircles the vase below its exterior rim. Reverse: Two cloak-draped youths stand in conversation, each holding a walking stick; hanging cloth in between. Also a border of meanders beneath. Vase reassembled from large fragments, with modest restoration, with none affecting any significant portions of the figures. Aside from a small patch of flaking and fading on reverse side, the preservation of surfaces is choice, with the glaze mostly glossy and free from weathering. Simple and elegant, with fine figural art, this is a truly choice antiquity! Measures: 29 cm tall; Diameter: 32 cm.

Repossé Gold Mask Ring, ca. 4th-3rd Century BC. An ancient Greek gold miniature male mask mounted in a modern 18+ Kt gold ring setting. The repossé mask bears several tiny holes on at its edges (only visible from the back) indicating that it was originally used as an appliqué attachment to a larger piece of jewelry or clothing. Measures: 3.75 ring size; Weighs: 11.1 gm.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.
It is part of a group of three appliques from the Le Clerque Collection, Paris. Published in Indianapolis Museum of Art Catalog, Summer, 1974, Vol. I, No. 4, Pl. 38 (middle photograph P.262).
